Running, exercising and coaching people outdoors means that my skin takes a bit of a battering. Add to that the fact that I travel the world to race in hot countries and you can probably appreciate how important it is for me to protect my skin from  sun damage and increased risk of melanoma. But I have tried tonnes and tonnes of different suntan lotions for my face in the past and they have all been a nightmare.

I either get that chalky white look as if I’m suffering from some deadly disease and need to be hospitalised, or my skin gets as slick as an oily puddle or as spotty as a teenager. And I have tried lots from big brand name suntan creams to the equally big brand and expensive lotions just for the face. I had given up until I came across Heliocare Advanced XF Gel, SPF 50, £23 ( which offers broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

UVA accounts for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation and are relatively equal in intensity all year round. They penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB, and play a major parting skin ageing and also skin cancers and can also penetrate glass. The intensity of UVB rays vary according to season and location but also damage the skin and contribute to cancer.

I came across this range, improbably while having my eyebrows threaded in a salon. Thought I’d give it a try and it is AMAZING. It has a gel consistency so it goes on really well, doesn’t leave residue on your skin or make me look like I’m about to go to a Halloween party. And it works.

The only downside is that it is water-resistant not waterproof so if you’re a triathlete, keep searching!
